SRI Around The World: The Positive Challenge

The U.S. SRI industry provides us with an abundance of news, but GreenMoney still looks to see what else we can be doing. Covering international SRI during our 10th anniversary year made sense in theory, but it is impossible to report on all of it; good news abounds in the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia and Canada. There are dozens of screened mutual funds, new pension regulations, investment research firms, several new SRI indexes from Dow Jones and FTSE, trade associations, publications, and, of course, a growing market of investors. In addition, numerous SRI conferences have been held over the last several years from
London to Hong Kong. Later this year, two more international events are scheduled: "Ethical Investment Management Seminar" on June 18-19 in London and the "Triple Bottom Line Conference" on November 7-8 in Brussels. For more agenda and speaker information visit the conference's web sites at- www.euromoneyseminars.com and www.tbli.org.

The US-based Social Investment Forum (SIF) saw the growth in SRI around the world coming several years ago and started the SIF International Working Group. The Group covers a wide variety of key topics including access to international SRI information, international "right to know" legislation, strategies for expanding SRI, international shareholder advocacy, and trends in global sourcing and production. The International SRI Working Group, chaired by Mark Regier of MMA Praxis Funds, will play an increasingly important role as SRI develops around the world including a potential new partnership to produce a global SRI Trends Report. Also note that there are several international or global (includes U.S. companies) SRI funds already on the market from U.S. mutual fund companies, including Calvert, Citizens, MMA Praxis, Portfolio 21 and Walden.

To launch our international SRI coverage, we've asked some top people to inform us what is happening in their region of the world. In the following two articles, Cassandra Higgs of UK Social Investment Forum and Timo W.M. van den Brink, of Triple P Performance Centre in The Netherlands share the good SRI news. Online at- www.greenmoney.com we have included several more international SRI articles and resources.
