The "Certified Chain of Custody" program (established by The Certified Forest Products Council) is designed to guarantee that the wood used in consumer products is ecologically acquired. The Certified Forest Products Council's mission is to promote ecologically responsible buying practices throughout North America in an effort to improve forest management practices worldwide. http://www.certifiedwood.org

ENERGY STAR Program is a voluntary partnership between the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, product manufacturers, local utilities, and retailers. This partnership helps promote efficient products by labeling with the ENERGY STAR logo and educating consumers about the benefits of energy efficiency.

Green Seal is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the environment. It sets environmental standards and awards a "Green Seal of Approval" to products that create less pollution to the environment than other similar products. http://www.greenseal.org

ISO is a private sector, international standards body based in Geneva, Switzerland. Founded in 1947, ISO promotes the international harmonization and development of manufacturing, product and communications standards.
ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standards (EMS) are voluntary standards and guideline reference documents which include environmental management systems, eco-labeling, environmental auditing, life-cycle assessment, environmental performance evaluation, and environmental aspects in product standards. EMS specification documents call for environmental policies to include commitments both to compliance with environmental laws and prevention of pollution.

LEED, established in 2000, stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a project of the U.S. Green Building Council, a nonprofit organization comprised on design professionals, manufacturers and others related to the building industry. The purpose is to provide a standardized rating system that is consensus-based for environmental performances for residential and nonresidential buildings. It comprises of checklist for green performances in sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design process.

Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), an independent scientific organization since 1984, works toward a more sustainable future, has developed mechanisms to accurately evaluate environmental impacts, implement improvement strategies, and communicate environmental performance. SCS has focused on improvements in areas of foods, forestry, fisheries, and household products. http://www.scs1.com

SPI Plastic Container Coding System. The Society of the Plastic Industry developed a uniform coding system for plastic containers that identifies bottles and other containers by resin composition. This assists in recovery of plastic containers for further use. The codes appear as a triangle-shaped icon with a number inside it. Each code number represents a basic resin family used in plastics.

Plastic Recycling Codes
CODE: 1 Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET). Common areas of use: soft drink bottles, carpets, strapping, containers, industrial paints.
CODE: 2 Polyethlyene (HDPE). Common areas of use: detergent bottles, trash cans, drainage pipes, pails, margarine tubs, grocery sacks.
CODE: 3 Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). Common areas of use: drainage and water pipes, siding, electrical cords, resilient flooring, countertops.
CODE: 4 Polyethlyene (LDPE). Common areas of use: film, bread and trash bags.
CODE: 5 Polypropylene (PP). Common areas of use: auto parts, batteries, carpets, furniture.
CODE: 6 Polystyrene (PS). Common areas of use: insulation, packaging, household products.
CODE: 7 or O Other plastic and co-mingled plastic.

The Natural Step Program.
Oncologist Dr. Karl-Henrik Robčrt founded the Natural Step Program (TNS) in Sweden in 1989. Today TNS is an international nonprofit environmental education organization working to build an ecologically and economically sustainable society. TNS offers a framework based on science and serves as a compass for businesses, communities, academia, government entities and individuals working to redesign their activities to become more sustainable.
